the “rock” end of ocean view drive

Driving past divided avenues with palm-rowed islands and corpulent, opulent houses—villas that one sees in magazines or glamour-magazine photo shoots, not in front of your eyes—I wondered what I’d find at the end of the road.

At the Lion’s Head end of Ocean View Dr, between the still rising building with the improbably cantilevered balcony and a relatively hidden white house is a path between some boulders that brings one to a magnificent view looking over Clifton and Camp’s Bay and, of course, the Atlantic.

Sitting on a rock, I watched the sunset with a friend on Tuesday. It was one of those sunsets that starts yellow and goes through orange before hitting and staying on red for a while, painting the clouds gradually and then receding again like the ocean itself.

  1. Glad you went and found it to be a worth while expedition! Hope you enjoy many more good times up there..

  2. Yep it’s a great spot – but it usually smells like urine, with glass scattered around everywhere and the odd bergie hanging around. If you want to find easily accessible spots that are pristine for sunsets you need to search a little harder ;)

  3. I strongly believe the litter has gotten worse and it pisses me off too mallix. Have you searched for another rock besides the initial rock that greets you as you walk in? I think you have to explore to fully enjoy the experience. Also in the same area, a little higher up at the end of Arcadia Road is a perfect place for a sunset – path and a bench to sit on!! hope this finds everyone well & remember, leave only your foot prints.

  4. Mallix–do you want to share any other spots? I’m hoping this site is about sharing secrets, not keeping our secrets to ourselves. I quite enjoyed the spot.

There was definitely some litter when I was there, but I didn’t seen any bergies or smell urine.
