wynberg’s cape malay food: bibi’s and cozy corner

Wynberg is a veritable oasis of Cape Malay food in the southern suburbs. I’ve tried two places in the last few weeks and I enjoyed both of them thoroughly.

Bibi’s Kitchen is a simple, but clean and modern restaurant on Broad Road. One orders from the counter next to the display of samoosas and moons. I had malsala steak with yoghurt salomie (roti wrap) and a samoosa. The wrap particularly was fantastic and I’m already planning a return trip. Prices were quite reasonable (around R40 for the salomie) but not cheap cheap.

Cosy Corner on Ottery Rd. takes on the appearance of an American diner, but don’t be fooled by that: their food is local and lekker. Ordering at the counter flanked by the display case of samoosas and moons was also the case here. I had the butter chicken salomie and a chicken moon. Both were quite good. Their menu was a bit more varied than Bibi’s, offering the same sort of salomies and curries but also ribs and other such dishes.

Some friends tried both as well and they slightly preferred Cosy Corner whereas I slightly preferred Bibi’s. Take your pick; I don’t think you can go wrong.

So what are your favorite places to get Cape Malay food?
